Get your ingredients ready
Here are all the ingredients that I used for my perfect cannabis brownies:
- Cannabis butter (cannabutter): 1 cup (you can adjust the dosage based on your preferred potency)
- Unsalted butter: 1/2 cup (to balance the cannabutter flavor)
- Granulated sugar: 1 cup
- Brown sugar: 1/2 cup
- All-purpose flour: 3/4 cup
- Unsweetened cocoa powder: 3/4 cup
- Salt: 1/2 teaspoon
- Baking powder: 1/2 teaspoon
- Large eggs: 3
- Vanilla extract: 1 teaspoon
- Chocolate chips: 1 cup (optional, for extra gooeyness)
Note: If you don’t know how to make cannabutter, I strongly recommend checking out this article.
Step 1: Decarboxylate Your Cannabis
Decarboxylation is the crucial first step in making weed brownies.
This process activates the THC in your cannabis, making it psychoactive.
- Preheat your oven to 245°F (120°C).
- Spread your cannabis evenly on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Place it in the oven for about 30-40 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes to ensure even heating.
The cannabis should turn a golden brown color. This low, slow baking process transforms THCA into THC, unlocking the psychoactive potential of your cannabis.
Step 2: Prepare Your Cannabutter
Creating cannabutter is where the magic happens.
- In a saucepan, melt 1 cup of butter over low heat.
- Add the decarboxylated cannabis to the melted butter.
- Let the mixture simmer on low heat for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally.
This slow cooking allows the THC to bind with the fat in the butter.
After simmering, strain the mixture through a cheesecloth into a jar or container, squeezing out as much liquid as possible. Discard the plant material. Your cannabutter is now ready to use.
Make sure it cools to room temperature before using it in your brownie recipe.
Step 3: Mix the Dry Ingredients
Next, grab a large mixing bowl and combine 3/4 cup of all-purpose flour, 3/4 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder.
Sift these ingredients together to remove any lumps.
This step always felt like a mini science experiment to me – getting the base just right is key to perfect brownies.
Note that dry ingredients form the base of your brownies and give them their rich, chocolatey flavor.
Mixing them thoroughly at this stage ensures a consistent texture in your final product.
Step 4: Cream the Butter and Sugars
In another bowl, cream together 1 cup of cannabutter (at room temperature) and 1/2 cup of unsalted butter with 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1/2 cup of brown sugar.
Here, I recommend using an electric mixer to beat the ingredients until they are light and fluffy.
This process incorporates air into the mixture, which helps to create a lighter, more tender brownie. The combination of granulated and brown sugar adds depth and moisture to the batter, enhancing the overall flavor.
Step 5: Add the Eggs and Vanilla
Once your butter and sugar are well blended, add 3 large eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Finish with 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
Each time I add the eggs, I’m reminded of how they bring everything together, providing structure and richness.
The vanilla is the secret touch that amplifies the chocolate flavor, making every bite delightful.
Step 6: Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients
Now, it’s time to bring everything together.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, folding gently with a spatula.
I always found this part therapeutic, watching the batter come together.
Be careful not to overmix – you want just enough to combine the ingredients. If you’re a chocolate lover like me, folding in 1 cup of chocolate chips at this stage makes the brownies extra gooey and delicious.
Step 7: Bake the Brownies
Finally, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
Pour your batter into the pan, spreading it evenly with a spatula.
Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
Trust me, the hardest part is waiting for them to cool on a wire rack – but it’s worth it!
Proper cooling ensures they set perfectly and are easier to cut.
Enjoy your weed brownies!
Making weed brownies became one of my favorite baking adventures.
Each step, from decarboxylating the cannabis to mixing and baking, felt like a blend of art and science.
The end result?
A delicious, potent treat that’s perfect for sharing or savoring alone.
Remember to start with a small piece, especially if you’re new to edibles, and wait at least an hour before having more.
