I ignored my mental health in my 20s. Now, practicing holistic wellness is saving me

In my 20s, I lived life at full throttle, ignoring the whispers from my mind and body, telling me to slow down.

It was a decade marked by long work hours, endless social gatherings, and a relentless pursuit of career success.

Mental health?

It was a concept I brushed aside, believing it was something I could “deal with later.”

Holistic wellness was a term I associated with luxury spa retreats, not a necessity for someone like me.

The wake-up call came in my early 30s — burnout hit me like a freight train, accompanied by anxiety and a sense of detachment from the world around me.

It was then that I realized that neglecting my mental health wasn’t just risky — it was dangerous.

Luckily, I started exploring the holistic wellness industry and discovered it wasn’t about indulgent treatments or fleeting trends.

During this time, I learned so much about practices like mindfulness meditation, balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and sufficient rest in my daily routine.

This journey redefined my approach to living. Holistic wellness has shown me that caring for the mind, body, and spirit is not an option — it’s essential for survival.

As I share my story, I hope to dispel the notion that holistic wellness is merely a trend or luxury. It’s a lifeline—for me and potentially for others who’ve sidelined their mental health in the hustle of life.

Embracing a new path

The journey from neglecting my mental health to embracing holistic wellness was not an overnight transformation. It was a series of small, consistent steps that gradually led to significant changes in my life and well-being.

The first step was acknowledging that I needed help.

This realization allowed me to start therapy—a decision that opened my eyes to the importance of addressing mental health issues head-on.

My therapist introduced me to mindfulness meditation — a practice I initially approached with skepticism.

However, dedicating just 10 minutes a day to this practice began to shift my perspective. The constant buzzing of thoughts started to quiet, and moments of peace became more frequent.

Nutrition was the next frontier.

I swapped processed foods for whole, nutrient-rich alternatives. It was challenging at first, but the fog in my mind began to lift, replaced by a newfound energy and clarity.

Incorporating regular exercise into my routine was another pivotal change.

Whether it was a brisk walk or a yoga session, movement became a non-negotiable part of my day. But I wasn’t trying to achieve a certain physique. I was just honoring my body’s need for activity and the mental clarity that came with it.

Prioritizing sleep was the final piece of the puzzle.

Establishing a bedtime routine and sticking to it made a world of difference. Gone were the days of scrolling through social media until the early hours. In its place came restorative sleep, which left me feeling rejuvenated each morning.

Is a holistic lifestyle really that inaccessible?

A common belief that often surfaces when discussing holistic wellness is its perceived inaccessibility.

Many people think that embracing a holistic lifestyle requires significant financial investment, an abundance of free time, or access to exclusive resources.

To be honest, this misconception was the first thing that held me back in my early attempts to seek a healthier lifestyle.

So, here’s the truth:

The most impactful changes I made required more mindfulness than money.

Meditation, for instance, cost nothing but a few minutes of my time each day. Resources and guides are readily available online for free, making it an accessible tool for anyone with an internet connection.

Similarly, improving my diet didn’t mean shopping exclusively at high-end health food stores. It was about making better choices within my budget and planning meals more thoughtfully.

Even small adjustments, like choosing water over sugary drinks or incorporating more vegetables into meals, made a noticeable difference in how I felt.

As for exercise, I discovered that staying active didn’t necessitate a costly gym membership. Walking in nature, practicing yoga at home with online videos, and other body-weight exercises became my go-to solutions.

Through these experiences, I’ve learned that holistic wellness is far more accessible than many believe.

Embracing mindfulness as a foundation

The cornerstone of my journey into holistic wellness, and perhaps the most transformative aspect, was embracing mindfulness.

This practice, once foreign to me, became my sanctuary, offering peace in the chaos of daily life.

Sharing this, I hope to guide you on how to incorporate mindfulness into your routine, illustrating its simplicity and profound impact.

As I mentioned, mindfulness began for me with just 10 minutes of meditation each day. I started by finding a quiet spot and using a free app to guide my practice.

The key was consistency — making it a daily habit was crucial.

Initially, my mind wandered incessantly, but with time, I learned to observe my thoughts without attachment, bringing a sense of calm and clarity that I hadn’t known was possible.

But mindfulness extended beyond meditation for me. It seeped into everyday activities—eating, walking, even listening. I practiced eating meals without the distraction of screens, savoring each bite and appreciating the nourishment it provided.

Walks became exercises in observation, noting the sensation of the ground beneath my feet and the sounds around me.

Listening—truly listening—to others without formulating responses in my mind improved my relationships significantly. These practices didn’t require extra time or resources; they simply required me to be present.

So, here’s the thing:

If you’re seeking to overcome feelings of overwhelm or disconnection, I encourage you to start small with mindfulness.

Dedicate a few minutes each day to meditation or mindful observation.

The beauty of mindfulness is its accessibility — it can be practiced anywhere, at any time, and it requires only your willingness to be present.

Stepping back to move forward

Reflecting on my journey toward holistic wellness, I’ve come to understand the power of taking a step back to reassess our lives more holistically.

It’s not merely about adopting new health practices. We need to reshape our entire approach to life.

This process involves recognizing the influence of societal expectations and conditioning, and the liberation that comes with defining our own paths.

In my pursuit of a more balanced life, I realized that many of my stresses and anxieties were not solely my own but were, in part, absorbed by the world around me.

The expectations to constantly achieve, to always be “on,” and to neglect personal well-being in favor of productivity were not inherently mine but imposed by societal norms.

Acknowledging this was a pivotal moment.

To sum up my experience:

  • Taking responsibility for my well-being allowed me to reclaim control over my life.
  • Thinking for myself helped me distinguish between what I truly wanted and what was expected of me.
  • Acknowledging dissatisfaction as a signal for change was empowering.
  • Understanding the impact of societal conditioning revealed the importance of aligning my life with my true nature.

Facing reality, rather than succumbing to blind positivity, equipped me with the resilience needed to navigate life’s challenges.

As you reflect on your own path, consider how external influences might have shaped your perceptions and behaviors.

And most importantly, remember that holistic wellness is deeply personal and continually evolving. It invites us to break free from societal expectations, embrace our authentic selves, and reshape our reality in alignment with our true nature.
